I let sports affect my relationships. I don't hang out with Cubs fans unless they pay me. By the way, Dagger - you owe me $20.

I now understand what kind of fan you were actually talking about. You are talking about Yankee's fans (and a few other sports people who take the word "fan" and destroy it with their activities). After all is said and done, you are correct it is a game. There is no reason why this should affect relationships or any day to-day activity. I agree with what you are talking about - as I read this as a complaint to a true fan of sports who understands that any given day, any team/person can win or lose and being excited for a win or a little sad that the team you like lost is acceptable. My apologizes for the misunderstanding and I know agree with all that is stated in the post.

Agreed, it is just a game, and Oprah is just a talk show host. But I'm not one to go shouting my love of sports from the rooftops. I'm the guy whos girlfriend insisted he watch the Philadelphia/New England game, just so I would have at least one game of the season under my belt.

"Oh man can't I just play video games?"
"Not untill you finish your football!"
"Ok I made it 2 quarters is Law and Order on?"
"No Tron don't you care about sports?"
"No and why the hell do I always hear Tom Brady yelling? They really need to take the mic out of his helmet"
"I'm sorry you feel that way"
"At least now I'll understand why all the people at work are pissed off tomorrow."

Valid points, Augie, but I'll disagree. Getting passionate while watching sports is one of the best parts of being a fan. If you don't care about the outcome, then why even be there in the first place?

However, when the game ends, and your team lost, just move on. Your life is virtually unchanged except that a bunch of guys you don't know personally just lost a kids' game. It's okay to be reasonably disappointed, but when people let the outcomes of sporting events affect their mood, their relationships or their day-to-day lives, I find that ridiculous.

Same with playing sports. Do everything you can to win, but don't act like a pouting, self-indulgent a-hole when it's over. Yeah, you lost. But you're still alive, still healthy, you did your best, and you probably got some exercise. Have some dignity, for god's sake.

That's my only point in critiquing "it's only a game." Play to win, watch with hope and enthusiasm, but when it's over, spare us the wallowing, self-important moping.

I agree on the "that's fuckin' sick" quote that should be installed in every woman. Like when you buy a new car and she says "it's cute" you want to take the car back or drive it off a cliff. However, if she said "that's fuckin' sick" you would more then likely want to throw her in the back seat and show her how sick it is.

I am, however, on the fence with the "it's just a game" question. Ya, maybe it is just a game and ladies don't understand how we can be more passionate about a game where guys throw/hit/catch a ball. However, on the other hand, look at it in this context...Why do you feel compelled into living a pseudo life with Rachel from friends or Tila from Tila Tequila. We don't care who Tila picked or who Rachel is sleeping with this week, yet you let it affect you and live you life around watching those shows. In a way, it is the same thing why we need to be home or by a t.v. when the Rockies were in the playoffs and the game was about to begin, or why we get angry when we have runners on 2nd and 3rd with no one out, yet we fail to score. Understand the relationship? I can go further!
