Top 5

The last time I was hanging out with Dagger he wouldn’t shut the hell up about High Fidelity. At least once an hour there was some kind of reference to that comedy about fear of commitment, hating your job, falling in love and other pop favorites. It was enough to convince me to re-watch it. Doing so has inspired me to create this list: My top 5 songs for a Monday morning, because you don’t want to hear that sad, bastard crap. Like I said this is just my top 5, I want to hear what yours are as well.

Manic Monday – The Bangles

Hot

Sure seems like an obvious choice because it has Monday right in the title. But I choose it because it is up beat and poppy, yet it still manages to pin point the angst that comes from Monday, well as much angst that an attractive all female 80′s pop group are able to convey.

I also enjoy this song for it’s pedestrian rhymes. Take for example the chorus: It’s just another manic Monday/ I wish it were Sunday/ ‘Cause that’s my fun day/ My I don’t have to run day. They would have kept going had Happy Gilmore been there to help them out.

It’s also nice to start the week by thinking about an attractive all female 80′s pop group.

Another F.U. Song – Reel Big Fish

“We’re in a ska band. Can you tell?”

Nothing gets a week going like singing along with a song where every other word is “fuck.” Singing along allows me to get out all the frustrations that Monday brings as well as creating an outlet for me to say the things I want to my boss while allowing me to be gainfully employed.

If you got a problem with this choice then fuck you the most.

Thriller – Michael Jackson

Ah! Zombies!

Thriller reminds me of a better time, a time when the concerns I had focused around getting drunk and chasing girls. Thriller was always the song of choice in our Beirut room. Never was there an evening of Beirut that wasn’t accompanied by the awesomeness that was M.J. pumping from the hi-fi that sat in our sunroom.

As I get older and my days become filled with adult concerns, concerns that are abruptly brought to mind Monday mornings, it is nice to have a reminder of the good times. Limon knows all about the good times.

If You Want Blood (You Got It) – AC/DC

Olof, metal

First of all I still haven’t figured out how to get Microsoft Word to put a lightning bolt instead of a forward slash. Second this song rips! That kind of energy is needed on a Monday morning. This song contains an opening riff that will feed the inner rock star we all have. The kind of riff that will get you amped and make you believe you can take on the world.

For me this song conjures up images of Anthony LaPaglia drumming and Rory Cochrane doing the air vocals, which means that it is Rex Manning Day. And who can be unhappy on Rex Manning Day?

Lovin’ (What I Got) – Sublime

The dog’s a band member

This is one of my all time favorite songs. I hear this song and a calm comes over me. There’s nothing that can bother me for the length that this song is playing.

Brad states that he doesn’t get angry at the bills he has to pay. The bills are inevitable, much like Mondays. So there’s no point to let it get you down. Fuck it? Fight it? It’s all the same. So crank your top 5 songs for a Monday morning and get ready to work for the weekend.

Life is too short, so love the one you got.
