There's that scene in one of the last episodes of East Bound and Down that rips off this in probably the best possible way.

Too bad Clemens didn't throw a strike that broke Wonderboy in half the way he did to break Wonderbat, Homer's homemade bat. That may have made the movie a little more better, and a little bit weirder for that matter.

And Gutter, I'm with you. I hate when people will change a story to please people. Roy failing would have been much more interesting.

I read this book in high school for my senior project. The book is much different than the movie. The movie shows Roy Hobbs as a hero who in the end successes and lives happily ever after, the book paints a much different tale. In the book Roy continues to stumble over his own feet and in the end strikes out in the final game (unlike in the movie where he hits the homerun). The book ends with Roy Hobbs crying and a newspaper boy asking if his career is indeed over.

I guess the director didn't like this ending very much and wanted the typical Hollywood ending, but as is the case in most books that are made into movies, the book is much better, even with the sad ending.
