I saw this movie with my Dad, who was at Yankee Stadium for several games during this chase. (He was in high school.) He remembered that a lot of people were upset that it wasn't going to be Mantle who broke the record, but they got behind Maris in those last few games. I obvs loved the film as a Yankees fan, but I love just about every baseball movie anyway.

I remember in my sophomore year of high school, in my english class we were all given a year in history and had to make a poster board promoting why our year would be the best to time travel to. I had a blurb on there about Maris' 61 in '61. (It was still a really big deal then because no one had broken it yet) I never realized the complexity of the story or the way it polarized baseball fans until seeing this movie later on. It's a great flick (unlike Mike) and I probably need to add it to my collection.

I always felt kind of bad for Roger Maris based on what I'd read. Now I want to see this movie. I also found it odd how Yankee fans fawned all over Mickey Mantle even though he was something of a scumbag. But hey, it was the 60s, so whatever, right?
