I like this movie a lot and I think your analysis is spot on.
On a related note, I am actually in this movie. Back in the day I attended a Rangers game with my good friend Pooge. His parents had season tickets and since the Devil Rays were in town, his dad said we could go to the game cause "he didn't want to watch that crap." Little did we know that during the 7th inning stretch the stadium announcer would come on the loud speaker and tell us that a movie was being filmed and that we should all cheer when the actor runs out of the bullpen to the mound. I am sitting about 15 rows behind the first base dugout. At the time we didn't even know what movie it was for but it was fun. I guess this used up about 20 seconds of my allotted 15 minutes of fame.

Dang, that should have been my story for Alex on Jeopardy.
