Happy Friday #70: Smell Ya Later Edition
In midwest Colorado we were born and raised. On the internet is where spend most of our days. Chillin’ out, maxin’ relaxin’ or coolin’. Shootin’s some links out to our readers. Went to one bad site and our moms got scared, said you’re reading CJS, even in Bel Air. Typed in the browser and when it got there I could see this site was rare. Will Smith on the cover, and Bill Allen was near. I thought nah forget it, yo homes the links if you dare. I pulled up to the link, about 7 or 8, yelled to the cabbie, you homes smell ya later. Looked at the video, no time to haste, this day I was about to waste.

We’re going to start this Friday off with you required viewing, and it is Rad related, shocking I know. Bill Allen, Mr. Cru Jones himself, shows up on Tosh.0 to recreate one of the classic scenes from Rad. It is so good to see Bill Allen has not lost his sense of humor. It is also nice to see someone with a TV show trying to get a DVD release for Rad. That reminds us; if you haven’t signed the online petition to get Rad released on DVD what is wrong with you? Also go ahead and take a moment to do so now, the rest of the links will be here waiting. Just make sure you don’t over rotate in doing so. And if you can’t watch the video, make sure and do it at home it is that good.

Yesterday Dagger did his annual review of Halloween costumes. He only covered the stupid and the sexy, but many people will be dressed as the frightening tomorrow night. We, as humans, have had a long fascination with creatures that are super natural and somewhat scary. But do you ever stop to wonder where this fascination comes from? Cracked.com takes a look at where some of the origins of some of the most popular monsters and scary ass creatures come from. Surprisingly they may have all bee started by the same dog.

While were on the subject of scary things, Chuck Klosterman gave this fun interview to the A.V. Club. He talks about his new book, slightly, but mainly he and the interviewer talk about Chuck’s fears or lack of fears as it turns out. I will admit I share the fear he has about motorcyclist. I have always felt that way as soon as I learned to drive.

Chuck Klosterman was part of last week’s Happy Friday, as was a story about the Tampa Bay Lightning playing some strip hockey. As this story will show, strip hockey is something left to the professionals. A junior team in Boise, Idaho lost their rink privileges after imitating Martin St. Louis and the rest of the Lightning. This is the first time in 5 years anyone has tried to imitate the Lightning, teaching us that the Lightning is not a team to imitate, ever.

The World Series started on Wednesday and after two games it is tied up and heading to Philadelphia where it is the hottest ticket in town. People will give just about anything for a ticket as demonstrated by one super fan. She was busted after offering sex for a ticket to the game. It doesn’t say if anyone was desperate enough to give up their ticket for a little something something. Kudos for her for using what she’s got to try and um score a ticket.
We finished up Summer Homestand series this week. A series that was inspired by our love of the Major League movies. While we didn’t cover those movies in the Homestand, we covered them before. If you missed that, we apologize, but in place of that we offer you this quiz all about Major League and for good measure here’s one on Field of Dreams.

Sticking with sports we turn out attention to football. There is no doubt the game is in intense and hard hitting. Over the past few years there have been many studies about the effects the game has on the brain. More recent studies are proving just how damaging head trauma received during games can be. The studies are showing more and more former football players suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s at younger ages. This is not just a problem for the NFL but for college and high school level football as well. This could lead to a lot less people playing football, and ultimately be the game’s final downfall. While this isn’t the usual happy fodder, we did find it interesting and we truly hope the NFL and other football organizations start doing more to ensure the long term health of their players. We would hate to see some of our favorite players end up like our wrestling heroes of yore.

Onto other sports where head trauma is a very real possibility. Back in 1980, before a fight, Muhammad Ali was filmed as he trained for the fight. A practice that is almost standard now. As Ali was prone to do he talked a good game. But then he got rocked in the ring. Now, almost thirty years later, espn is playing the footage mixed with current interview footage. Dagger has caught some of it and said it has been excellent. We like the idea, we think it is a fresh approach to TV, a good way to spark interest in boxing again, and we’re happy the footage lay dormant until now so that it should be used this way. So look for it Tuesday nights in espn’s “30 for 30″ series.

Perhaps a show about boxing is not up your alley. Maybe “True Blood” is more your speed, and if you’re a girl, most likely it is. That’s not to say there aren’t dudes into this show, as John DeVoe will tell ya. He will also explain why there are less dudes into it and how the show is a good study in the why people do what they do. Over all the article is fun and it intrigued me to give the show another chance. And with Halloween a day away, this is the perfect time to give it a shot, let’s hope the only part of it that sucks are the vampires. OK I’ll stop with the puns.
Did you ever dress as a vampire for Halloween ? Was it the favorite costume you ever wore for the holiday? What was your favorite Halloween costume? That is this week’s confessional topic. Whether is was a vampire, your favorite cartoon character, or one you thought was brilliant but no one else got and you spent the whole night having to explain it, we want to hear about it. Send your response to staff@crujonessociety.com and maybe we’ll give you some candy.

You know what else is on TV? Commercials. Commercials are thing we are never going to be rid of and like most things people will always get their panties in a twist over stupid and ridiculous things. This time people are raising a hub-bub over a recent DirecTV ad which has a scene from Tommy Boy. David Spade breaks character to inform us that we can watch the best movies on DirecTV. People are in a hizzy about it because the commercial also feature Farley doing his fat man in a little coat routine. They’re not upset about the routine, but rather the fact DirecTV is using a dead celebrity to hock their product. First of all it’s a commercial, get over it. Second I like it because it means I get to watch an awesome scene from one of my favorite movies several times a day. And third, which bugs me a lot about people getting fired up over these things, this commercial probably would have existed and gone unnoticed by a lot of people, but the little tizzy thrown by these people has brought it to the forefront of people’s mind and actually got people talking about DirecTV which is what DirecTV wanted in the first place. But I digress.

Now we have the section we turn over to our readers. If you come across any fun links and want to share them and help your fellow man waste time at work, send them our way, staff@crujonessociety.com , and we will put here for others to read.
This week we received a couple from F-U-Natalie, the fact that she sent us a couple tells us she indeed knows how to waste some time at work so take a cue from her and enjoy not working for a bit. The first one she sent is a link we gave you a few months ago, but it is fun and you may have missed it then. It serves as a reminder that when you receive a replay from someone on the internet it may just be that they are dicking with you, so beware.
The other link we received was sent while F-U-Natalie and her coworkers were reminiscing about the snow days at school. Not so much the ones that cancelled school, but the ones that cancelled recess where you were forced to hang out in the gym. Yeah that always kind of sucked. But she started thinking about things from the childhood and came upon this site. Ah the 80’s a time when the world’s problems didn’t mean a damn thing to us. Enjoy the flashback!

Ah snow days, a free day off. I spent my recent one watching Last Action Hero and drinking. But have you ever wondered what Storm Troppers do with their days off? We know this is probably on a lot of people’s minds. Well never fear, we have found a photo journal of exactly how hey live it up when they’re not trying to destroy the rebels. Some people have too much time on their hands.
*
From Star Wars to Star Trek we are ending this week on a very nerdy note. But dammit if this isn’t one of the funniest videos we have seen in a while. The boys on “The Big Bang Theory” once played Klingon Boggle, but that doesn’t seem that dorkish when you compare it to this guy who sings an Eminem song in Klingon. Yes you read that right, an Eminem song sung in Klingon. White rappers have just been set back another 20 years.
*
Hope you were able to waste enough time and now you can get ready for your Halloween festivities. And with that we leave you with this, the true meaning of Halloween.
Smell ya next week.
