It’s so hard to compare comedic and dramatic shows that you pretty much have to create separate lists for each. I enjoyed the hell out of the “Dundies” episode of The Office, but how do I rank it against the “Pine Barrens” episode of The Sopranos? The former, incidentally, is perhaps my favorite episode of television, ever. Even comparisons within genres can be impossible. I love Lost just as much as any other douche, but it’s riveting in a totally different way than The Sopranos or 24 (which are, themselves, different sub-genres.) I’m not even sure which version of The Office I prefer anymore…

Really good list, I have never seen Dexter either, but have heard nothing but great things about it from everyone. The one that I would add would definitely be The Sopranos. It was the start of all the other great successful show like Dexter, Deadwood, Weeds, etc.

jitterrawks, I totally agree about the “visions”, I understand to do it early on in the show to show how observant he is but now it does feel a little like Blue’s Clues with them highlighted.

Awesome list! All in my top 10, 3 in my top 5. Family guy and Chappelle show would get pushed down to make room for Psych and Deadwood.

Great list! I’d also add Weeds and Psych. Weeds, along with several of the shows on the paid cable channels, has pushed the limits of what a 30-minute show should be. It has drama, suspense and some comedy. It goes places you wouldn’t expect a television show to go. Psych…well, it’s a hilarious concept that the main networks have copied (The Mentalist, which is heckled at least once every other episode). The only thing that could bring it to a higher level is if they didn’t make the “visions” so obvious…I’d like to see if I could follow along without the zoom in and *ching*…but it’s a show that’s nabbed me from the start.

Great list. I honestly cannot disagree with any of your selections. However, I have not seen Dexter, so I cannot speak on it. My replacement (and the one show I think needs to be included) is Arrested Development. This show reached a completely different level of comedy. Gob and Buster are two of my favorite characters of all time. And David Cross’ Tobais Funke stole a scene in every episode. Awesome.
