Happy Friday #77: Hey DJ Edition
We’re wrapping up playlist week here Cru Jones Society, and we thought we would close it out with a playlist of websites to visit throughout the day. It’s like music for your eyes. This list is not designed to put you in the mood for the open road, or to rise up against the establishment, or get a lady ready to knock some very sensual boots No, this list is designed to help you waste company time, give you some laughs, and keep you in touch with the world outside of your cubicle. Like everyone else this week we have Conan, but we also have beer and movies. So let’s get one more playlist going before the weekend.
1. Geekweek.com – “Your Multiverse”
We have to start this week off with one of our new favorite sites. With its excellent writing, relevance, and giving us content we really care about, Geekweek.com has become a daily stop for us. For all the pop culture related news it is the perfect stop. For instance where else are we going to hear about a Masters of the Universe inspired art show, aside from all those Master of the Universe message board RSS feeds we get? From the same site we can also get information about HBO’s new gangster show (Scorsese is involved) or Beltran’s knee surgery. Ok we don’t really care about that last one, but if we did then we would be set. So this week’s required website is Geekweek.com.
2. iTunes – “CJS Mixes”
Our plan when we started set out playing DJ and made the mixes you read about all week was to make these mixes available to our readers. Also Corriander asked that we do this and we can’t let our fans down. So if you like the playlists we made up and want your own copy, or decent facsimiles as not every song we chose can not be found on iTunes, then use these links to get your own Road Trip Mix, Punk Rawk Mix, or Love Lounge Mix. This is an advanced “you’re welcome,” for the deal you sealed with the Love Lounge Mix.
3. Facebook – “Getting’ Busy”
While we’re still talking about the mixes that have been streaming all week on KCJS, we mentioned yesterday that if you had your own playlist you wanted to share with us and with all the readers then you should send it to us and we’ll put it on the Cru Jones Society Official Facebook Fan Page. CassieB took us up on this offer and sent us a sweet mix for gettin’ busy, and it is one dirty sexy playlist. If you want to check it out all you have to do is become a fan of CJS on Facebook then head over to the Discussions section and you’ll know exactly how she got pregnant.
This is the first of exclusive content from CJS that can only be found on Facebook. We’ll have more discussions, information on CJS bar nights, and other fun stuff only on the CJS Facebook Fan Page. It is kind of like one of those television kid’s clubs there were all the rage in the early 90s, only jazzed up to fit modern times, also we have no where near the budget a television station has. But you’re on Facebook any way, so become a fan and let’s talk about CassieB’s mix.
4. Latenight – “Shakeup”
The biggest news story of the week and somehow it falls to the fourth track, such is life. By now you have probably heard about Jay Leno’s show sucking in the rating is during prime time and NBC wants to move him back to late night and push “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien” back a half hour. A half hour doesn’t seem like much, but in late night it is. Upon hearing the idea from NBC, Conan said that he will not move his show. This has caused a lot of drama, “Jersey Shore” style, and ironically a lot of joke fodder for late night shows. As the picture above indicates, we’re siding with Conan on this issue. “The Tonight Show” is such an iconic institution and should be held to a different standard than other shows and don’t move it around for a washed up comedian. Patton Oswalt offers a great take on it here, going so far as to compare Leno to Nixon, and he is absolutely right on every point he makes. Here’s the part I don’t understand, when other shows do as poorly in the prime time ratings as Leno’s they get axed, but Leno gets to move time slots? What the balls is so special about Leno? Does he have juicy information or a scandalous photo of NBC execs or what? Just drop him and avoid all this nonsense.
5. The Muppets – “Don’t Call it a Comeback”
Frankly we’re tired of reading about the late night drama. So we’ll move on to entertainers who are more lovable. This article talks about how the Muppets are on the rise for the first time since Jim Henson’s death. I for one could not be happier. There are three factors that have really helped the Muppets make this comeback. First of all they have some good writers again, Jason Segel is writing a new feature film, and we saw what he can do with puppets with his Dracula musical. Second they are now owned by a company who knows a thing or two about marketing, Disney, yes that Disney. Disney is pushing the Muppet brand hard, using one of their favorite techniques, synergy! The Muppets have made appearances all over Disney owned channels like ABC and ESPN. Thirdly the Muppets have fully embraced the internet to re-launch themselves, complete with their own Youtube channel and Twitter account. Youtube seems like the perfect venue for the Muppets and my year has just gotten a whole lot happier.
6. Drinks – “Beer”
Have you ever watched the Muppets while drunk? I probably have, and it was probably awesome. While we don’t have any news on Muppet beer, we do have some news that is going to shake up the beer world. The first story comes from the CJS backyard, Fort Collins, CO. A new brewery is set to open, not such a big deal, that happens a lot in CO, but this one, called Equinox Brewing Co, has decided that each beer will be sold with its recipe, ingredients, and tasting notes so home brewers can recreate it. Seems like a ballsy move, what’s that old adage, “why buy the cow when you get the sex for free?” But we support them for trying something and encouraging more home brewing. They are opening they’re brewery across from a brew shop, I wonder if they got a little kickback from that?
From micro brews to imports we now look to the Netherlands. Dutch brewers Heineken are poised to purchase the Mexican company responsible for Sol, Dos Equis, and Tecate. Heineken is hoping this will help them to better compete with Miller and Budweiser. At this rate it feels that every beer will eventually fall under one brewer, but as long as it taste good and gets us drunk we don’t care who owns it.
7. Sports – “Ladies Scroll Ahead”
What goes better with beer than sports? Ok yeah, maybe nachos, and girls in bikinis, or more beer. It was rhetorical, now stop. Let’s start off with some baseball news as that seems most fitting with the beer connection. During the last off season Matt Holliday was traded from our beloved Rockies to my beloved A’s only to later become another notch on the Money Ball bed post and went to the Cardinals. The red birds were so thrilled and impressed with Holliday they offered him a sick ass deal. Don’t believe us? Check it out here. Then try to not be disappointed when you get back to work.
There is no doubt in our minds Dana White is the best president in all of sports. He’s real, down to earth, and genuinely loves the sport of MMA. We could listen to him talk about UFC or fighting or anything really, and luckily we have this long ass interview from Esquire to help us do just that. Somehow damn near everything he says is as interesting as anything could be. If the NFL had someone as charismatic as White, it would be completely unstoppable.
In more UFC news, an Abu Dhabi company has purchased 10 percent of UFC’s parent company. This deal is expected to help the UFC gain popularity overseas, especially in China and India. That would be huge. The best part would be the growth in talent that could come about. If you have ever seen Japanese wrestling then you know Asian fighters are intense and so much fun to watch. Be sure to keep an eye for UFC 112, April 10th, which will most likely take place in Abu Dhabi, and if the rumors hold true it should be a sick card with Anderson Silva and B.J. Penn both on it to get the Abu Dhabi crowd into it.
8. Cats and Dogs – “The Battle Rages”
You may remember a confessional question in which we asked if you were a cat person or a dog person. Our results were fairly evenly split and we just wanted to know for fun. Other people, however, were looking deeper into the matter to seek information and patterns about personality and psychology. Check it out and see if the results they found apply to you and your love of dogs or cats. The things some people get paid for, meanwhile I have to smack copy machines.
While we have you thinking about the Monday Confessional, we want to remind you about the upcoming question. You get to make a superchild for any reason. Which two people do you take DNA from to make this kid? What aspects from a couple of people would you want for this kid? Would Bea Arthur and Yao Ming give you the tall kid you always wanted? Or maybe Lou Ferrigno and Bea Arthur for the kid with monster like strength? Whatever two people have the traits you want to pass on to a child, we want to hear about it. Send your responses to staff@crujonessociety.com.
9. Movies – “Like You’ve Never Seen”
There are movies we have watched over and over and over and not surprisingly they never change. Then we read this piece on Cracked.com and had our minds blown. We’re ready to watch some of our favorites with a new perspective and ultimately see a new one in the classics. The Ferris Bueller one sent our brains into overload more than the rest, and makes us think John Hughes was way more awesome than we already thought he was. Yeah we didn’t think that possible either.
While we’re on movies, we’d like to share this fun link with you. Many of our readers have expressed their love for The Big Lebowski; while it’s not one of our favorites we enjoy it and appreciate it. But when a move reaches cult status the way Lebowski has it often inspires fans to approach it with different and interesting tributes. As writers, we found this to be one of the best tributes one could do. It is The Big Lebowski written as a Shakespearean play. It seems absolutely fitting and we have mad props for Adam Bertocci and his skills.
10. Demotivator – “Overweight Sadness”
Food taste better with salty tears.
Have a good weekend…
