I remember renting this, thinking that it might be a good opportunity to see Heather Graham naked. I have had many, many opportunities since, but this was the only movie until The Hangover where her (non, in this unfortunate case)-naked body wasn't the best part.

I was talked into seeing this movie but I walked out of the theater completely satisfied. It has a patch of weak 20 minutes but overall it was surprisingly hilarious.

I never saw this, but having just watched the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uswr9A3SuOY I can see why this movie didn't catch on. It's basically impossible to describe in less than a paragraph, and if you're working that hard to tell the public what a movie is, you've already lost.

The trailer's filled with lots of funny sight gags, but the explanation for the plot is still confusing as hell. Plus, as you alluded to, it seems like a bit too much inside baseball, and you're right, the public sometimes hates that (e.g. Studio 60).

However, having recently watched Parenthood again and realizing just how freaking good it is now that I'm older, I'm developing an appreciation for Steve Martin and this looks like fun.
